False bid for music collection

An eBay sale has gone wrong after the more than $3 million US winning bid for a record collection was declared false.

Music lover Paul Mawhinney, 68, had put his massive collection of more than three million records, tapes and CDs, for sale on the online auction site with an opening price of $3 million US.

The auction closed last week with a bidder based in Ireland placing the top bid of $3,002,150 US for the collection.

eBay said the bid was not legitimate and that the bidder’s account has been suspended. An Irish eBay member who owns the account has claimed to be a victim of identity theft, saying he knew nothing about the bid until he received an invoice.

Mawhinney is closing his Pittsburgh store Record Rama and selling his collection because of his failing health.
