A security guard stole thousands of pounds worth of electrical goods from Tesco’s Carlisle store and sold them on eBay, a court was told yesterday.

Graham Rothery, 28, of Scotby Close, Carlisle, admitted 12 charges of stealing from his employer and two charges of selling the items for cash under the Proceeds of Crime Act. He also asked for 92 other offences to be taken into consideration when sentencing.

Carlisle magistrates were told that items worth a total of £7,248 were stolen from the shop between August 2006 and June 2007. The items included digital cameras and mobile phones.

Prosecutor Peter Bayley said the thefts were discovered after a stock check at the store and the items were found to have been sold on eBay from an account linked to Rothery.

It was alledged that in a police interview Rothery said he had started bit by bit until he was taking items every couple of days. He made around £5,000 from the sales and all the money went through a PayPal account.

The case was adjourned until September 28 for crown court committal.
