PayPal to set up development centre in Chennai

PayPal, a global online payment company, Thursday said it will soon launch its India Development Centre in Chennai.

“The setting up of PayPal’s India Development Centre is validation of India’s front-runner status in the global IT scenario,” Minister for Communication and IT Dayanidhi Maran said.

“The vast knowledge and expertise of Indian technical professionals will help PayPal expand its business, while continuing to provide secure online payment services for millions of Internet customers,” he added.

With more than 123 million accounts in more than 103 markets around the world, “the opening of the India Development Centre is crucial in helping to deliver our customers a great experience 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” PayPal chief technology officer Scott Thompson said.

PayPal vice president and GM (global product development) Raj Sundaresan said: “The starting of the India centre is in resonance with the government’s announcement of ‘The Year of the Broadband in India’.”

Founded in 1998, California-based PayPal enables any individual or business with an email address to send and receive payments online securely and easily using a bank account, credit card or stored balance.

PayPal also allows customers to shop online without sharing their financial information with merchants.

PayPal has presence in 13 markets outside the US including Britain, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and China.

In October 2002, PayPal was acquired by eBay, the world’s leading online marketplace.
