Reserve price not met for Alaska state jet eBay auction

Published December 29th, 2006

The Alskaian governor’s jet fell short of attracting a bid that the state considered high enough. The bidding on the online auction site eBay closed at 3:30 p.m. today.

The state bought the Westwind jet a year ago for $2.6 million, plus about $100,000 to train the pilots. Former Gov. Frank Murkowski faced sharp criticism for the purchase, and newly-elected Gov. Sarah Palin vowed to sell it.

“We’re a department that’s very good at adapting to whatever the boss wants. We get it done,” said Department of Public Safety Deputy Commissioner Ted Bachman.

Bachman said the state will try another 10-day auction on eBay. If the jet doesn’t sell online, the state plans to use an airplane broker.
