French designer labels Louis Vuitton and Dior Couture are reported to have filed a complaint in a French court against eBay, alleging that the online auction house is not doing enough to prevent the sale of counterfeit goods through its website.
The complaint, which seeks around $47million (£25 million) in damages, alleges that 90 per cent of Louis Vuitton-branded items for sale on eBay are fake, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.
A spokesman for eBay told the Journal that it is the responsibility of manufacturers to police their own brands and that eBay already does more than is required by law to protect them.
The online auction house, which is the world’s largest, used the same in an existing lawsuit brought by Tiffany & Co in 2004. That case is still ongoing.
