eBay accused of helping scalpers in Ashes rush

Cricket Australia says it is powerless to stop scalpers from selling Ashes tickets at exorbitant prices, blaming eBay for refusing requests to ban ticket listings.

Chief executive James Sutherland yesterday accused scalpers of “exploiting the public’s passion for the game”, saying: “Frankly I am disgusted.”

He said eBay should remove the tickets from its website “but their response has been, ‘It’s not our problem”‘.

Yesterday, ticket sales for the series had reached 300,000. Hundreds of tickets had made their way to eBay’s Australian and British sites.

Angry cricket fans showed their disgust at missing out by sabotaging online scalping efforts. Bids of up $250,000 were made for tickets on eBay, which is home to 200 auctions for 1000 tickets.
