Speculation increases on Microsoft eBay bid

Prompted by reports in the New York Post, speculation surrounding a major merger in the Internet world has intensified.

The paper cited multiple sources close to the matter last week, when it reported that Microsoft was considering buying the online auction site eBay, suggesting that while the recent Yahoo! eBay deal had not cooled the software company’s interest, anti-trust issues had slowed proceedings down.

Speculation at the start of the week has seen analysts and investors anticipating a deal that could possibly link one of the three big search providers, Yahoo!, Google and Microsoft, with eBay.

A report by JP Morgan and analyst Imran Khan revealed: ‘A partnership or merger between eBay and Yahoo! is the most strategically feasible.’

‘A combined company would have the leading position in auctions, communications, payments, graphical advertising, audience reach, and geographic breadth,’ it continued.
