A former Midland woman whose “Operation Letters from Home” to American soldiers in foreign war zones was publicized in December 2004 has pleaded guilty to wire fraud in U.S. District Court and will be sentenced at 8 a.m. April 26.
Assistant U.S. Attorney John Klassen said Wednesday that Jennifer Ellen Gumm’s illegal activities were unrelated to her work finding e-mail pen pals for and sending snacks, sweets, books and CDs to soldiers in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kosovo.
She was indicted last October for wire fraud and aggravated identity theft for using a female relative’s date of birth and Social Security number to get an eBay credit card, buy clothing from the Lane Bryant and Old Navy stores and have a security system installed in her home.
