Bobbi-Jo McKinnis didn’t realize she had become the victim of an apparent online thief until she tried to use her debit card at a local supermarket earlier this month.
McKinnis said the cashier told her the transaction was denied because of insufficient funds.
“As soon as I got out of the grocery store, I called the bank, and they said in fact that we were overdrawn,†McKinnis said.
McKinnis soon discovered that a day earlier, between 10 and 11 p.m., the checking account she and her husband, Danny McKinnis, share at Maine Savings Credit Union in North Vassalboro had been drained through nine purchases via a PayPal account. (PayPal is an online payment service owned by eBay).
