eBay customers build the UK’s largest online parcel empire

Published July 29th, 2010

A company in Bolton, that was created to serve eBay traders, has grown into the biggest online parcel delivery service in the UK.

An online parcel delivery was the brain-child of serial wheeler-dealer Fil Adams-Mercer, who set up Parcel2Go in 2002 primarily to serve eBay traders requiring UK and international courier services.

Mr Adams-Mercer, whose business career began selling bruised fruit, has developed Parcel2Go.com into a £16m a year business with over 600,000 customers.

The key to Parcel2Go’s success has been the heavy investment in a sophisticated customer relationship management (CRM) system. This has cost £2.5m to create, and a further £30,000 a month “and blood, sweat and tears” to run.

Mr Adams-Mercer has designed the company to take and co-ordinates orders that are then fulfilled by Federal Express, UPS and City Link.

“Other companies chase parcels,” he said. “We chase people who may be delivering parcels in the future.”

He is also growing a niche market in the USA. Most American websites will not deliver goods outside the US because of customs bureaucracy. Mr Adams-Mercer has bought a Miami warehouse which British traders can use as their “address” when buying from American sites. Parcel2Go will then arrange parcel delivery from the US.

He is currently studying the possibility of setting up delivery franchises in Spain and France.

Fil Adams-Mercer starred as one of the ‘Secret Millionaires’ in the last series of Channel 4’s show. He was dispatched to a cramped, dirty terraced house in Doncaster to experience what it’s really like to live on Jobseekers’ Allowance.

Mr Adams-Mercer, who is a cancer survivor, donated funds to the Firefly Cancer Charity and other local good causes in Doncaster.

No Doubt Holds eBay Auction for Charity

Published June 4th, 2010

Now that No Doubt is busy recording their new album, the band has decided to put some costumes and vintage memorabilia to good use by auctioning the items for charity.

The auction will include costumes from No Doubt’s 2009 U.S. tour, instruments they have played on stage and in videos, out of print vinyl, drummer Adrian Young’s old “tuxedo” and other one-of-a-kind items from the No Doubt archives. Says No Doubt front-woman, Gwen Stefani, “The tour last summer was so amazing, it was exactly what we needed to inspire the new record. Now that we’re in the studio we wanted do something special for the fans who did so much for us. It’ll be really fun to share the costumes – they’re wicked. A lot of the stuff was really hard to part with, but the money we’ll be able to raise, together with the fans, will be worth it. These charities need us, badly. It means a lot to us as a band to be able to support all the hard work they do.”

Adds guitar maestro Tom Dumont, “This auction is a really big deal to me personally, because I’m letting go of two really prized, iconic guitars in the hopes of raising as much money as possible for charity. In my history with No Doubt, the guitars I played in our music videos are the rarest and most valuable things I own. Please contact your richest friend’s Dad and tell him please go BIG on these auction items!”

The auction will be live from June 1-11 and 100% of proceeds will be shared between the following four charities.

Animal Acres – a paradise for farmed animals and the people who love them

charity: water – a non-profit organization bringing clean, safe drinking water to people in developing nations.

The ALS Association – encourages scientific research to find a cure for ALS (also known as “Lou Gehrig’s disease”)

Children’s Hospital of Orange County – a regional pediatric health care hospital which provides preventive medical care, education, and state-of-the-art pediatric biomedical research.

EBay Auction for National 9/11 Memorial Sculpture

Published May 18th, 2010

A national memorial created to honor the fallen firefighters of September 11, 2001, will be on auction on eBay until 5 a.m. PDT on May 22. Interested purchasers must be added to a pre-approved bidders list prior to making a bid. The 40-foot bronze sculpture, “To Lift a Nation,” recreates the historic moment when three firefighters raised the American flag at Ground Zero, memorialized in the now world-famous photograph by Thomas E. Franklin.

The sculpture, which was purchased with proceeds from a Ponzi scheme devised by Coadum Advisors, Inc., has been put up for auction on eBay by Huddleston Law Firm under the title “9/11 Firefighter Memorial Bronze Sculpture” to generate proceeds to the receivership in an attempt to recover lost funds for the defrauded investors, many of whom lost their life savings as a result of the scam.

The auction can be accessed using the following link: http://tinyurl.com/2b9gccz. The auction began May 12, 2010 and will end on May 22 at 5 a.m. PDT.

eBay and Gmarket Founder Plan Asia Expansion

Published May 10th, 2010

eBay Inc. and Young Bae Ku, the founder of Gmarket, Korea’s leading e-commerce company acquired by eBay in 2009, today announced a joint venture agreement to expand Gmarket’s existing online marketplaces in Japan and Singapore. The agreement will strengthen eBay’s presence in Japan and Singapore — where the e-commerce markets are expected to grow by 30% and 13% respectively between 2009 and 2012–and provide a foundation for longer term expansion of Gmarket into other Asian markets.

“eBay’s partnership with Young Bae Ku combines his expertise in Asia and Gmarket’s proven Korean online marketplace model to enhance our long-term position and growth in the region,” said Lorrie Norrington, president of eBay Marketplaces. “This joint venture is a sign of our continued commitment to help grow and lead ecommerce across Asia by offering more opportunities for sellers and extraordinary buying experiences for consumers.”

Upon the launch of the new joint venture, Mr. Ku will be chief executive officer for the new entity and will drive the vision for Gmarket’s future growth and expansion in the Asian market. As the founder of Gmarket, Mr. Ku led and oversaw the rapid growth of the online marketplace as it became Korea’s leading e-commerce company and expanded into other Asian markets. The formation of a joint venture will allow Mr. Ku and the new entity to take advantage of Gmarket’s existing presence in Japan and Singapore and its highly scalable platform for rapid product innovation.

“We are excited to join with eBay, one of the world’s most recognized e-commerce brands, in combination with our management team’s proven track record of establishing successful online marketplaces,” said Mr. Ku. “The joint venture will allow us to provide an enhanced e-commerce experience tailored for the Japanese and Singaporean markets, and to capitalize on our companies’ experience in the Asian e-commerce industry.”

eBay will have a 49% stake in the joint venture, and an entity owned by Mr. Ku will have a 51% stake. eBay will contribute assets from Gmarket’s existing Japanese and Singaporean businesses to the joint venture, and eBay and Mr. Ku will make financial contributions of approximately US$10 million each to the joint venture. eBay will also license Gmarket’s technology and brand on behalf of the joint venture, while Mr. Ku will provide local management expertise.

In June 2009, eBay Inc. acquired Gmarket for a total cash purchase price of approximately $1.2 billion. Gmarket is Korea’s leading online marketplace, and is a key component of eBay’s Marketplaces segment. The acquisition strengthened eBay’s e-commerce business in Korea and provided a platform for the company’s expansion throughout Asia. In the first quarter of 2010, eBay’s combined Korean businesses exceeded expectations and the ongoing integration of eBay’s existing Korean business, Auction Co. (formerly Internet Auction Co.), and Gmarket is proceeding well. The new joint venture will not impact eBay’s businesses in Korea.

Second Chance Wildlife Center today announced that it is entering the eBay Fundraising Tournament for the Environment in hopes of raising badly needed funds. eBay generously seeded the contest with $50,000 and that amount can grow during the contest, which runs from April 22 to June 22. While not required, “voters” can also donate money directly to their favorite non-profit in addition to voting. Humanity Calls is running the Tournament.

Kevorkian Bus for eBay Auction

Published April 24th, 2010

VW parts expert Jack Finn is putting Jack Kevorkian’s infamous “death bus” on the auction block. Kevorkian allegedly used the bus for assisting terminal patients in committing suicide. Finn, who sold VW parts to Kevorkian over several years, purchased the notorious Volkswagen van in 1997 prior to Kevorkian’s incarceration. Finn has been storing the 1968 Volkswagen Bus/Vanagon unused in a warehouse in what he describes as basically the same condition as when it was used by Kevorkian.

Whoever buys the bus will be investing in a piece of authenticated history including all its faults according to Finn.

The aging VW comes complete with the transfer of ownership title signed by Kevorkian. Like Kevorkian, his “death bus” has a police record having been impounded repeatedly by police as part of their suicide investigations.

“The bus is the real deal, not a romanticized copy such as what is used in the HBO movie, ‘You Don’t Know Jack’,” says Finn. “The vehicle drove in under its own power but to use the bus on the road today would require bringing it up to current standards. Although the vehicle may actually move and stop under its own power, it’s being sold as a collector’s item, not a drivable bus.”

Finn, a former automotive engineer who turned his frustration with his first Volkswagen Beetle into a career supplying hard-to-find parts via mail order for do-it-yourself VW owners, has decided it is time to clear out the warehouse and sell the infamous bus. The bus was listed Thursday, April 22 on eBay.com. To find the listing, Google “kevorkian death bus” or “jack death bus”.

The vehicle has been offered to The Henry Ford and Smithsonian Museums as well as being posted on eBay.

According to Wikipedia, Kevorkian, who became known in the 1990s as “Doctor Death,” advocated for terminal patients’ right to die via physician-assisted suicide. Kevorkian claimed to have assisted in the deaths of at least 130 people. Between 1999 and 2007, Kevorkian served eight years of a 10-25 year prison sentence for second-degree murder.

Finn says that Kevorkian has not asked to visit the bus since his early release for good behavior.

UK eBay Seller Faces Fine

Published April 21st, 2010

Paul Barrett from County Durham became the first trader in the UK to be prosecuted for online auction fixing. Barrett is facing a fine of up to £50,000 after using two eBay accounts to bid against himself. Barrett admitted 10 breaches of recent fair trading regulations, with each offence carrying a maximum fine of £5,000.

Barrett was investigated after a complaint that he had advertised and sold a minibus on Ebay with false low mileage.

Vanessa Canzini, head of corporate communications for eBay in Europe, said: “We are extremely pleased to learn of the conviction of Paul Barrett. Shill bidding is illegal and it is important for people to understand that there is not, nor has there ever been, room for illegal activity on our site.

“We invest over £6m each year in state-of-the-art technology to detect shill bidding and other illegal activities. This acts as a strong deterrent to the small minority who attempt to use our site inappropriately but, more than this, it helps us to work with law enforcement agencies to secure successful prosecutions if anyone decides to try their luck.”

The case was adjourned for sentencing at Bradford crown court on 21 May.

Stamps.com(R), the leading provider of postage online and shipping software solutions to approximately 400,000 customers, today announced that it will continue to enable unlimited batch shipping from eBay Stores without any service fees to new customers who sign up before October 1, 2010. Batch shipping with Stamps.com allows eBay sellers to print up to 1,000 labels at a time, and via all classes of USPS mail — including First Class Mail International(R).

These additional integrations allow webstore managers to process, manage, and ship orders from virtually any e-commerce source. Other features available to standard customers include the ability to print postage directly on envelopes or on NetStamps(R) for convenient mailing solutions.

Zuujit Updates Leading eBay iPhone Application

Published April 7th, 2010

Zuujit, LLC announced new upgrades to its industry-leading eBay (NASDAQ: EBAY) mobile selling application for the Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone, ZuujitTM for Online Selling. This latest version Zuujit for Online Selling is free, and further enhances the speed of creating a listing, while improving overall ease of use, by providing a single application for selling items on eBay using the auction, fixed price, or classified formats. And, unlike eBay Selling, it supports listing and auctions in some categories of eBay Motors.

“As the original iPhone selling application for eBay and, as our first step toward creating a ‘Social Marketplace,’ our goal has been to make online selling fast and easy,” said Zuujit CEO Tyler Gildred. “Using an Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad anyone can start their own online business or just make extra money cleaning out the garage.”

Zuujit Simplifies Online Selling

According to independent testing, Zuujit for Online Selling is the fastest mobile application available for creating a complete eBay listing. It allows users to post through eBay, including some segments of eBay Motors currently unavailable to eBay Selling users, with just one application.

First-time users can get items up on eBay in minutes – without using a computer – by simply utilizing an eBay seller account and attaching up to five photos. The tool automatically creates a custom listing by recommending a price, selecting a category, writing a description, and even helping ship an item upon sale by using the location of the device (GPS) or the auction address information to help determine shipping costs. And, because it is a fully certified eBay Compatible Application, Zuujit for Online Selling provides full eBay security so mobile users can make money on the Internet without worry.

“With this simple tool, people can now manage auctions quickly, discretely and easily in a secure environment,” added Gildred. “Anyone who has used eBay in the past will quickly see how this app removes some significant barriers to success.”

The Zuujit for Online Selling mobile application is free and can be downloaded at: http://tiny.cc/3dx0k.

Tiffany Criticizes U.S. Court of Appeals Over eBay Dispute

Published April 1st, 2010

Tiffany & Co. has today criticized the decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit that allows eBay to continue to sell counterfeit TIFFANY products on its website. While the decision leaves room to establish Tiffany’s claims for false advertising, it leaves in place a prior ruling which allows eBay to profit from counterfeit sales. This decision will not help innocent consumers who are being victimized by illegal e-commerce practices.

“Obviously Tiffany is very disappointed by today’s decision. As an e-commerce leader, eBay has a responsibility to protect consumers and promote trust in its marketplace,” said Michael J. Kowalski, chairman and chief executive officer of Tiffany & Co. “eBay knew that counterfeit merchandise was being sold on its site – and eBay took no effective steps to stop it. eBay deliberately misled consumers for profit, and unfortunately, the court has justified its actions. The consumer is the real loser today.”

Tiffany’s attorneys are performing a full review of the decision and will consider an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.

TIFFANY & CO. operates jewelry and specialty retail stores and manufactures products through its subsidiary corporations. Its principal subsidiary is Tiffany and Company. The Company operates TIFFANY & CO. retail stores and boutiques in the Americas, Asia-Pacific and Europe and engages in direct selling through Internet, catalog and business gift operations.
